What decides it

What a Bengaluru campaign has to get right

A ward is won by a few thousand votes

With about 24,000 voters per ward and urban turnout often around 50%, a corporator seat is usually decided by a few thousand votes and sometimes by a few hundred. That changes everything: the campaign is street-by-street and apartment-by-apartment, and every booth agent and every reminder call matters on polling day.

New wards, new boundaries, a fresh roll

This is the first election for the five corporations, ward boundaries have been redrawn, and reservations were notified in March 2026. The special intensive revision of rolls means names have been added, shifted and deleted. A candidate who campaigns on old BBMP ward maps or an old voter list will waste days on voters who are no longer theirs.

Apartments and RWAs are a vote bank of their own

Large gated communities can hold more than a thousand voters each, vote in blocks and are hard to enter without an invitation. Resident welfare association meetings, a clear civic agenda (roads, garbage, water, flooding) and WhatsApp groups reach them better than rallies do.

Bengaluru campaigns in four languages

Kannada first, with English, Tamil and Telugu content for the neighbourhoods that need it. Voice calls and SMS have to go out in the voter's language, and the DLT templates for each must be approved before you can send — that takes around 10 working days, so start now.

Short notification window

Civic polls typically move from notification to polling in a few weeks. Surveys, ward voter data, booth teams and message approvals have to be ready before the schedule is announced, not after.

FAQ

The Supreme Court has directed that elections to all five Greater Bengaluru Authority corporations be held by 31 December 2026. The Karnataka State Election Commission will notify the exact polling date; check its notification for the final schedule.

How many wards are there in the GBA elections?

369 wards across five corporations: Central (63), North (72), South (72), East (50) and West (112).

How early should a corporator candidate start the campaign?

Before notification. A ward survey, a cleaned voter list and booth-level teams take two to four weeks to set up, and SMS/voice approvals take about 10 working days. Candidates who start after the schedule is announced lose most of their working time.
