The 2027 calendar
Five assemblies are due early in the year: Uttar Pradesh (403 seats), Punjab (117), Uttarakhand (70), Goa (40) and Manipur (60), all expected around February–March 2027 because their 2022 elections were held then. Himachal Pradesh (68 seats) is expected around November 2027 and Gujarat (182) around December 2027. None of these dates is official until the Election Commission of India announces the schedule, typically five to seven weeks before the first phase.
Why the announcement date is the wrong starting line
Once the schedule is announced, the Model Code of Conduct applies immediately. New government announcements stop, advertising needs certification, every expense is tracked against the limit, and bulk messaging needs approved templates. Anything you have not built by then — a survey, a booth structure, a message, a data system — has to be built under pressure and in public.
A realistic preparation timeline
Six months out: a constituency diagnostic survey and a go/no-go decision. Five months: war room, booth-level structure and compliance registrations. Four months: the core message, tested with voters. Two months: full outreach across voice, SMS, WhatsApp and social. The final week: turning identified supporters into votes. For February–March 2027 polls, that means the diagnostic should already be under way.

Spending limits to plan around
The Election Commission's expenditure limit for an assembly candidate is ₹40 lakh in larger states such as Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh, and ₹28 lakh in smaller states such as Goa and Manipur. Party spending is separate, but everything spent by or for the candidate counts — including vehicles, printing, digital ads and bulk messaging.
What differs by state
UP is booth arithmetic at enormous scale across multiple phases. Punjab votes in one day across three very different regions. Uttarakhand's hill seats are a logistics problem. Goa's seats are small enough that nearly every household can be reached. Gujarat and Himachal, voting late in the year, give candidates who start now the luxury of time.
Bottom line
If you intend to contest in early 2027, the work that decides the result happens in the next three months — long before the Election Commission announces the dates.
